Barry Schwabsky is an art critic, art historian and poet based in New York City. He is currently an art critic for The Nation and co-editor of international reviews for Artforum. In this interview, Barry Schwabsky shares why he quit graduate school to move to Italy, his most beautiful encounters with art, and how being an art critic affects his poetry.

I was a fairly introverted kid. I was the kid that was bad at sports and liked to read. It wasn't a normal thing for my family to come to New York City. When I was a teenager, I became interested in what was going on in New York and started to come in on my own. I would have liked to be a musician, but I didn't have any talent. That was my dream as a teenager.
BS: In the way that every child is an artist - the question isn't when did somebody start becoming an artist, it's when did they stop making art?
