  • Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub [ a ] c. Hailing from a Kurdish family, he was the first sultan of both Egypt and Syria. An important figure of the Third Crusade , he spearheaded the Muslim military effort against the Crusader states in the Levant.
